I'm walking along the foreshore, down by the beach Where all the real estate is out of reach Joggers jogging by, riders riding by They'r huffin' puffin' shufflin' all aiming high Self inmprovement is where it's at but I don't think I can cope with that 'caus I'm just an ordinary man I'm too blues for country, too hick for blues There's gotta be an angle I can use Maybe I should sing country - that's where it's at but there's nothing more stupid than Lee Kernaghan's hat I've got too much hair for jazz, not enough hair for rock and everyone can see I've been aroun the block and I'm just an ordinary man

Open Road 05:06
They drove in silence for most of the day Empty horizon not much to say Then she said It’s empty he agreed that was true No phone reception nothing they could do So many things are closed on the open road So they sat and waited beside the van Alone and tiny in this wide empty land Hoping that someone would help them on their way But the road ahead was empty and the past too far away So many things are closed on the open road A car in the distance but he drove right by Didn’t even look sideways who knows why They saw the sticker on his back screen A map of Australia with love it or leave So many things are closed on the open road

JOHN KELLYS CALENDAR John Kelly has a calendar and he’s marked out all the days 787 until his retirement day The office has a window, I watch the girls go by I see the busses grinding on and catch a glimpse of blue sky Once, between the buildings I saw a daylight moon But I was brought back to earth all too soon By another pointless meeting, one more stupid call Some big shot down from Sydney supposed to motivate us all And they sometimes ask me why do I stay I ask myself that question every single day. Sometimes we talk about it, John Kelly and I And dream up ways to walk out and not even say goodbye Maybe I could turn feral and grow veggies in the hills Or buy up some sort of franchise for my lawn mowing skills And they sometimes ask me Why do I stay I ask myself that question every single day Ahh but I’ve got my reasons Like a year’s got it’s seasons A man’s got to do what a man’s supposed to do But I wonder what would happen If I believed I could fly Would I take to the wing or come crashing down and die

One Day 03:20
ONE DAY One day I’ll be rusting possums in the roof Pigeons in the kitchen floorboards coming loose The porch out the front has long since blown away There was nothing left to shelter anyway One day the old dog’s grave will be erased by time Replaced by a fading keep out sign Old sheets of Iron laying on the ground Sheds and shelters falling down But once there was a garden with fruit on the vine A band on the verandah with dancing and wine Once there was a wedding out on the back lawn Once a little child was born I’ve been renovated I’ve been bought and sold Advertised as charming an investment one should hold A renovators dream then land value only Now no one seems to own me But once there was a swing set kites flying in the breeze Once there were little children climbing in the trees I’ve seen a thousand goals kicked and many overs bowled But now I’m just old One day I’ll be empty standing all alone Anyone that knew me long since dead and gone One day I’ll be leaning wind howling through the door No one knows my story any more

about

I had the idea for the general direction of this record when I was walking the dog along a railway track on the outskirts of Adelaide. A huge freight train thundered by and disappeared into the distance. There are a lot of songs about being somewhere else on this record. With Eddie Morrison on bass and backup vocals, Jake Morrison on guitar and backup vocals and Andy Przygonski on drums. I do what’s left.

about

Don Morrison Adelaide, Australia

“Don Morrison is a larger than life character who is smaller than he should be in terms of fame and success. He could have been Paul Kelly, or John Mellencamp, or Bruce Springsteen, and to some loyal followers he is in the same category as these well known troubadours. Circumstances have prevented Don from achieving similar levels of fame, but he is a local treasure none the less." ... more
