Last night I was asleep I heard the Devil call my name
He said Don boy come on down It’s time I staked my claim
I cried and I cried out loud I regret what I have done
But the Devil he just laughed and said Don you’ve had your fun
I heard the Devil call my name
At last I finally woke My room was all in flames
My lungs filled with smoke I heard the Devil call my name
I cried Lord help me now but he just turned the other cheek
He said I can’t help you now you’ve got your destiny to meet
I heard the Devil call my name
I heard the Devil call my name
Now I feel like I’m burning up inside
I’ve got nowhere to run nowhere to hide
Well I said to the devil Mate how would you feel
Maybe we could get together and do some sort of deal
He said I’ve been burned by that crap before
I don’t do that crossroads shit no more
I heard the Devil call my name

In Australia
03:12
|
|||
He sold of his herd and then he sold his land
Except for their tiny house he sold everything they had
Because things were closing in he thought they might not survive
But with that money maybe one of them could get out alive
He’d heard about a place where you could be free
Called Australia
So he said to the boy You are my eldest son
And there has to be a way that we can carry on
I’ve heard about a place where you can be free
It’s way over the mountains and far across the sea
But take this money and you can get on a boat
To Australia
As he watched his son leave on the back of a truck
The old man knew he’d used up the last of his luck
Because things were closing in troops were all around
They came into the village and razed it to the ground
But just before he died a message got through
That his son was on a boat and on his way to
Australia
Now everybody here knows the rest of this story
One of the world’s richest nations covers itself in glory
What are we doing here
What are we doing here
In Australia

Love Is
02:42
|
|||
I see him walking nearly every day
In a world of his own
An old man he slowly makes his way
Down to the old folks home
I’ve seen him sitting there in the garden
But he’s not alone
Holding hands with a grey haired old lady
They’re in a world of their own
Love is a wonderful thing
And it just keeps happening
Love is a beautiful thing
Love is all around
Lovecan pick you up off the ground
Love makes the world go round
I hear a new born baby cry
Her mother holds it to her breast
I see the tears in the fathers eyes
Of all their days this is the best
Sometimes I visit my old mans grave
To see how he’s getting along
He left me everything I need
To carry on
Love is a wonderful thing

Dreams
03:25
|
|||
I drove for three days across a dried out plain
‘Till it was time to across into the right hand lane
Some arsehole in a four wheel drive wouldn’t let me in
That’s when I knew I was back home again
I turned the radio on to a local station
I heard the last few chords of To Her Door
The radio announcer said That’s our Paul
But he left here forty years before
The old dog seemed pleased to see me
As I collected my mail
A bunch of bills and catalogues
Another Harvey Norman sale
And I wander through my empty house
And look at pictures of the past
Hanging there to remind me
Good times never last
Now all I have are dreams
Of a face and a place I’ve never seen
Of towns and hills and valleys places I’ll never know
That’s just the way it is now
I suppose
That’s just the way it is now
I suppose

Stuck In Neutral
03:53
|
|||
I’ve got my brain stuck in neutral
Every day just seems the same
Efforts to change are somewhat futile
And so I play a waiting game
All forward motion has been suspended
And the brakes firmly applied
The old timetable has been suspended
No forward movement on this line
I’m driving fast but getting nowhere
Speeding past the same old signs
Rubbing shoulders with the same old faces
And drinking too much of the same cheap wine
Sun comes up sun goes down
A burning wind blows the dust around
I can’t remember the last time it rained
This dry spell has been sustained
I’m driving fast but getting nowhere
Speeding past the same old signs
Rubbing shoulders with the same old faces
And drinking too much of that old cheap wine

Brunswick Street Strut
04:43
|
|||
I dreamt I went to Melbourne to kick start my career
I had to get away there was nothing happening here
I’d made a new cd the best one I’d done so far
Then it started getting played on 3 triple R
I’m walking down Brunswick street feeling out of place
A bearded hipster comes up to me staring at my face
“Man” he said “I love your new CD”
I went into a guitar shop there they wanted a selfie with me
And it was all just like a dream
Just like a dream
We had the album launch at the Corner Hotel
That place was packed with friends and faces I knew well
James Black from Rockwiz, Julia Zemiro too
They’re checking me out for episode number nine hundred and eighty two
Paul Kelly slips in and sits down in the back corner
Courtney Barnett, Jeff Lang and the A&R man from Warner
And during the break my old agent comes over to me
“Donny” he said “Lets get some action up in Sydney
I’ll organise a tour, just leave it all up to me”
And it was all just like a dream
It was all just like a dream
But it was just a dream
Just a dream
‘Cause now I’m in the front bar of the Federal Hotel
There’s a few lonely drinkers it’s a scene I know well
They stare straight ahead as I sing Pat Malone
For the together unconnected it’s a little too close to the bone
And after the gig the manager comes over to me
I know he’s gonna try to renegotiate the fee
I’ve done OK though, sold a few CDs
Enough for some cheap wine tomorrow and fish and chips for tea
I’ll get a cask of piss tomorrow and have fish n chips for tea
And it was all just a dream
It was all just a dream
I had a dream
Even I can dream

Happy Birthday To Me
04:55
|
|||
I woke up as the sun came up
On the railway side of town
I took a swig from my old brown paper bag
It warmed my bones as it went down
So I finished off that bottle
To get my heart started for the day
And as I rolled away my old newspaper
I saw the saw the date it said the fourth of May
And I said to myself
Happy birthday to me
When I was a little boy
I blew out all my candles
I feel a hundred years older now
And I’ve blown out all my chances
Happy birthday to me
I’ve got a kid somewhere
He must be grown up now
But I wouldn’t want him to see
How his old man turned out anyhow
‘Cause I walk the streets
And I sleep on the ground
Under the bridge by the river
With a newspaper eiderdown
And if I was a dog
They’d stick me in the pound
Feed me some meat
And then put me down
Happy birthday to me

Ride
02:59
|
|||
I’m driving over a rise
I sees the road stretched way out to the sky
I don’t know where it goes
Just follow my nose
I’ll find out where it is when I’m there
I’ll find out where I am when I get there
I look up to the sky
I see a ‘plane flying way up high
Maybe to Sydney or to Rome
Could be New York or Cologne
Exactly which city I don’t care
I’d love to be landing over there
Sometimes I get a little restless
Sometimes I get the urge to ride
The grass is always greener
On the other side
Freight train thunders by
If I could I’d hitch a ride
Way out west I’ll get my rest
When it sets me down
I could end up in a sleepy outback town
In the front bar of a pub in a one horse town
Sometimes I get tyne urge to travel
Sometimes I feel I have to move
Doesn’t have to be anywhere special
Just somewhere new

Fried By Dope
03:38
|

I saw Andrew Walker for the first time in years yesterday
At first I wasn’t sure it was him there seemed to be more than the usual decay
I bought us a bottle of whiskey and watched him drink it all that day
He did not remember me but he was happy to talk the day away
Andrew Walker was the one we all looked up to at school
He was smart he was rich he was handsome he was cool
We’d go around to his house and listen to his imported LPs
And he’d light up a joint and tell us all about world peace
He was the first one I knew with a Volkswagen Kombi van
He had a Gibson Les Paul and he was going to start a band
He held Ingrid Tully in the palm of his hand
But I don’t think life turned out exactly the way that he planned
He’s got a kid somewhere who long since moved away
Every few years she calls him up to say happy birthday
Ingrid Tully never came back from their trip to Byron Bay
And he said he wrote a hit song but he was ripped off and never got paid
So he sits in his housing trust flat and smokes dope all through the day
He says the cops want him dead because he knows more than he can say
He thinks his social worker wants to get his pension taken away
And his neighbours are trying to kill his dope plants with poison spray
Well I see it more and more as time creeps up on me
Minds fried by dope and living in a strange reality
Bright young things smoking their lives away
I saw Andrew Walker for the first time in years yesterday

Don Morrison Adelaide, Australia
“Don Morrison is a larger than life character who is smaller than he should be in terms of fame and success. He could have been Paul Kelly, or John Mellencamp, or Bruce Springsteen, and to some loyal followers he is in the same category as these well known troubadours. Circumstances have prevented Don from achieving similar levels of fame, but he is a local treasure none the less." ... more
